Hair Color

People of all ages have almost all kinds of hair colors. Therefore, hair color is not a strong signal in relation to age-except with gray hair.

Being a blond, a brunettes, or a redhead, or having black hair has no influcence on the age you convey. All hair colors can look equally young-except for gray or grayish hair. If you do not have gray or greyish hair there is no age-related reason to color your hair (but, of course, you may want to choose to color your hair for many other reasons).

Gray or grayish hair, is one of the biggest age revealers that we know. And getting graying hair happens to most people as they age. But people can start getting gray hair at any age after they are 30 years old.

How early we start getting gray hair is determined by our genes. This means that most people will start having gray hair around the same age that their parents and grandparents first got their gray hair. From the time a person notices a few gray hairs, it may take more than 10 years for all of that person's hair to turn gray. Gray hair is more noticeable in people with dark hair because it stands out, but people with light hair are just as likely to get gray hair.

The cause of graying hair is well known: The root of every strand of hair is fastened in a hair follicle. Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells (as does the skin). The pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin (as does the skin) that gives growing hair its color of blonde, red, brown, black, etc. (The dark or light color of someone's hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.)

As we get older, the pigment cells in the hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, the hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color-like gray, silver, or white-as it grows. As we get older, there are fewer pigment cells to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will be completely gray or white.

Luckily gray hair is also one of the easiest hair issues to do something about-with hair color. Use the Hair Coloring Guidelines to get the result that will make you look younger.

Age Concealing Hair Coloring Guidelines

  1. It is important that colored hair does not look like colored hair. What's the point in coloring your hair to conceal your age if the coloring shows the world that you color your hair and reveals that maybe you need to color your hair to conceal your age?
  2. Hair and skin tone that match the colored hair will look the most natural. If you stick to your original hair color you can be sure that hair and skin color match.
  3. If you are in doubt about the natural color of your hair, use the Skin Tone and Hair Color Matching Guide below.
  4. If all hair is colored the same color the hair often look colored. Make sure that there is natural tone to your colored hair. This can be done by using a multi-color kit. This will contain a mascara brush-like brush that can be used to create different nuances in the hair.
  5. Brush-up the coloring when new gray hair appears at the hair roots.

Skin Tone and Hair Color Matching Guide

If in doubt about the natural color of your hair, you can use the Skin Tone and Hair Color Matching Guide to find a hair color that will look natural to your skin tone. Generally the hair color should only be 1-3 shades different from the skin tone. In the Skin Tone and Hair Color Matching Guide you first identify your skin tone, then you follow the lines to the hair colors that are best matched to your skin tone.
